Gambling

The Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse currently has $244,000 for FY07 to pay for treatment services for individuals impacted by compulsive gambling. The money is disbursed by the Division through contracts to a variety of community service providers.

Types of services for gambling treatment which are funded by the State include:

• Assessment - an individual session to determine the nature and extent of the gambling problem as well as the treatment needs of the individual.
  


• Individual Counseling - meetings with a counselor on a one-to-one basis which focus on the individual's needs and issues.
  


• Group Counseling - individuals meet in a group, facilitated by a counselor, to talk about problems and provide support to one another.
  


• Intensive Outpatient Treatment - intensive services, totaling 9+ hours a week, which include group, individual and when possible family counseling. Education regarding gambling addiction is provided, relapse triggers are identified and relapse prevention plans are developed. Average duration depends on the needs of the individual.
  


• Day Treatment - clients stay in half-way house or other living arrangement and go to treatment 20 hours a week. Average duration 30 days.
  


• Inpatient Treatment - clients stay at the residential facility and receive services which include medical examination, education about addiction, family counseling, individual and group counseling, recreation and leisure time activities, and continued care planning. Services total a minimum of 30 hours a week. Average duration 7 to 30 days.
