Examinations
South Dakota requires a specific professional examination per license type, as follows:
- Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) requires the National Counselor
Exam (NCE) provided by NBCC.
- Licensed Professional Counselor-Mental Health (LPC-MH) requires the
National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Exam (NCMHCE) provided by NBCC.
- Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT) requires the Examination

All examinations are computer-based.
LPC and LPC-MH Candidates: A South Dakota license-trainee for either the LPC or LPC-MH is
eligible to take the specific examination at any time during their training process by applying directly with NBCC.
The two test centers are located in Rapid City and Sioux Falls.
Examination dates are available Monday - Saturday the first full week each month. The SD Board will not be involved in the examination process and
will not receive a copy of the scores. The path to get to the online examination information and registration is
as follows:
http://www.nbcc.org/stateboardlist?state=SD
- click on the appropriate Handbook for important information
- click on the "State Registration Form" and read through the Additional Information page
LMFT Candidates: An Exam candidate has a choice of taking the National Examination before or after their supervised training requirements. Taking the exam before the training requires completion of an Application for National Examination and Plan of Supervision among other requirements. For complete details, click on Application for National Exam.
If a candidate is near completion of their supervised training requirements they must contact the Board office (605-331-2927 or sdbce.msp@midconetwork.com) for the examination dates and registration materials. The two SD test centers are located in Rapid City and Sioux Falls.
