LICENSING PROCESS for the LPC
(LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR)

  1. File a Plan of Supervision after you find a qualified Supervisor (according to Administrative Rule) and prior to starting your supervised experience. The Plan of Supervision is page one of the LPC Application found on the web site.

  2. No other forms or fees are required at this time.

  3. Complete the 2,000 hours of post-Master’s supervised experience and 100 hours of supervision as required in Administrative Rule and detailed on the Plan of Supervision.

  4. If you have a question about your coursework satisfying the required coursework on Attachment B, please consult with your University program advisor. They know the courses’ content.

  5. If you have not passed the NCE (National Counselor Examination) as required for the LPC, contact the Board office via phone (605/331-2927) or email (sdbce.msp@midconetwork.com) for examination instructions.

  6. When all the requirements have been met, send a completed application (attachments, tracking form, picture, $100 application fee, etc.) to the Board office for preliminary review.

  7. Only complete application packets are sent to the Board Reviewer on a monthly basis.

  8. After being reviewed, you may receive a letter requesting further documentation or a letter announcing you have been approved for licensure and to send the required $100 Initial Licensure Fee to process your LPC. The Initial Licensure Fee is not pro-rated, is required from every applicant by Administrative Rule, and has not been previously submitted.

  9. The applicant has 30 days to send their Initial Licensure Fee to the Board office once they have been notified of approval.

  10. The new licensee will be required to renew the license before December 31 of that year and every year thereafter.
