Licensing

The South Dakota Board of Counselor Examiners has converted its forms to the ADOBE .PDF format (Portable Document Format) which is both device and resolution independent. The printed version of these PDF documents will be similar regardless of the device used to print. In order to view or print the Adobe Acrobat forms, you must download the free ADOBE Acrobat Reader for Windows, DOS or for Macintosh. For best viewing results, we recommend using Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0.

The board issues three professional licenses: Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Professional Counselor-Mental Health (LPC-MH), and Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT). Find application links below.

Application for licensure is made through the board office. Each application requires a non-refundable $100 fee. After board approval for licensure, the applicant pays the initial license fee. The initial license fee is not prorated.

Each license is renewed annually per calendar year.

Continuing Education

Forty hours of approved continuing education is required biennially per licensee at the end of each odd-numbered year. See more at ARSD 20:68:07.

20:68:07:09. Approval of sponsors. The board will accept continuing education credits for programs accredited, approved, or presented by the following national organizations:

(1) National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC);
(2) American Psychological Association (APA);
(3) American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT);
(4) National Association of Social Workers (NASW); and
(5) Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC).
(6) American Medial Association (AMA PRA Category 1 Credit);
(7) Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Care Organiztions (JCAHCO)
