Correctional Mental Health Services
Mental Health Services in Juvenile Corrections
The Division of Mental Health is responsible for provision of mental health and
psychiatric services to youth placed at the
STAR Academy
(State Treatment and Rehabilitation Academy) in Custer, SD. The Division
has two full time staff located on the Custer Campus. Services provided
include:
- Group and individual therapy
- Intake screenings with all youth
- Assessments
- Consultation with Department of Corrections Staff
- Treatment plan development
- Family Counseling
- Staff training
- Facilitating psychiatric appointments
- Crisis response
- Discharge planning
- Communication with parent’s and Juvenile Corrections Agents
Mental Health Services in Adult Corrections
The Division of Mental Health is responsible for providing mental health services to the
men and women placed within the
SD Department of Corrections system.
Services provided by Division of Mental Health staff include:
- Intake assessments
- Crisis management
- Inmate counseling
- Staff training & education
- Facilitating psychiatric appointments
- Discharge planning
The Division of Mental Health contracts with a licensed psychiatrist to provide psychiatric
consultations, diagnosis and treatment plan services.
