Independent Living Services
The focus of this program is to provide a broad scope of services to individuals who are visually
impaired/blind in their home communities and to teach the essential skills of blindness necessary
to continue to live and work as independently, safely, and comfortably as possible. Professional
rehabilitation teachers work with individuals in their homes to teach alternative techniques of
doing everyday activities.
Eligibility Requirements:
Significant visual impairment, substantial limitation in ability to function independently, a reasonable
expectation that IL services will assist the individual, and reside in South Dakota.
Services Available:
Services may include, cane travel skills, communications, writing letters, Braille, telling time, homemaking,
counseling, utilizing low vision, leisure activities, and training to public and private organizations.
