Mission Statement

The mission of the South Dakota Developmental Center is to provide individualized intensive treatment services to people with developmental disabilities and challenging behaviors only when appropriate services are not available in a less restrictive environment.

We believe that all people with developmental disabilities have the same rights, responsibilities and opportunities afforded others, including protection from abuse and harm caused by self or others.

We believe that all people with developmental disabilities have the capacity for growth and development.

We believe that the most positive and the least restrictive procedures should be used when teaching people appropriate interactions.

We believe that the services should promote independence and instill a sense of self-determination and well being.

We believe that normalization should be incorporated into peoples' activities by making available commonly accepted conditions of everyday life.

We believe that peoples' needs will be met by using an interdisciplinary approach when developing and implementing treatment plans.

We believe in working cooperatively in conjunction with the person, the family, guardian, conservator, and/or advocate in discussions and decisions which impact the person's life.

We believe in improving the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of services by developing and monitoring the attainment of annual treatment goals and objectives.

We will comply with state statutes as designated in SDCL Chapter 27B and meet the standards set forth by the Title XIX Medicaid Program and the Intermediate Care Program for Mentally Retarded regulations.
