Disability Awareness

Course Description: The course introduces People First Language. Exercises and discussions focus on how assumptions about people with disabilities can influence how we treat them and the importance of language in forming assumptions. This course covers the definitions of a developmental disability and a cognitive disability. It discusses what is required for an individual to be admitted to an ICF/IID and what services SDDC provides.

Course Objectives:

Participants will:

• Realize how beliefs about disabilities influence our perceptions of people.

• Understand how language influences and reflects attitudes.

• Recognize People First Language.

• Understand what is a developmental disability.

• Understand what is a cognitive disability.

• Understand how individuals are admitted to or discharged from SDDC.

• Understand what is an ICF/IID facility and what services SDDC provides individuals.

• Understand how federal regulations determine how ICF/IIDs provide services to individuals with Developmental Disabilities.
